The Port of Melbournes $1.6billion Port Capacity Project involves the expansion of Webb Dock to meet Victorias growing trade demands.

A significant component of the Project is the Maritime Works Package worth $400 million which was awarded to McConnell Dowell. This Design & Construct package includes the construction of a

920m Wharf at Web Dock West
Upgraded Navigation & Berthing aids
Rebuilding of existing Wharfs at Webb Dock East
2.3 million cubic metres of low impact dredging at Webb Dock

Gertzel Engineering Surveyors has been engaged by McConnell Dowell to provide Survey management of the project.

Corio Quay

Corio Quay Nth wharf is a multi purpose Berth which also provides access for a woodchip ship loader. The current ship loader facility is being replaced as it nears the end of its useful life. The new facility will increase the size of shipping that can berth for the next 20 years. The works required to construct the new facility include;

Breast & Mooring dolphins
Ship loading platform
Ship gangway.

Gertzel Engineering Surveyors was contracted to the McConnell Dowel for the provision of surveying services for the project. Survey works so far have comprised;

Construction set out
Services drawing/as-built
As-built construction details
Design verification

North Melbourne Train Station

North Melbourne Station is serviced by trains on both the metropolitan and regional rail network.

Approximately two million people currently use the station each year, the majority of whom use it to change to City Loop and direct to Southern Cross Station services. This figure is expected to double in the future as extra train services are introduced to meet growing passenger demands.

North Melbourne station is currently undergoing a $35 million dollar upgrade which will include:

a new concourse extending over the city end of the station, connecting a
new entrance to all six platforms via lifts and escalators and via stairs to
platforms one and six;
new passenger information displays;
canopies over platforms for weather protection;
resurfaced platforms to improve safety and amenity, especially for people
with disabilities or mobility problems; and
additional closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to improve passenger
safety and security.

To ensure there was minimum disruption to services and commuters McConnell Dowell designed a novel solution of constructing a monorail/protection deck system which covered the city end of platforms 1 to 6. This allowed the McConnell Dowell to continue to place footings, place services, erect precast panels for the concourse and station building without disrupting train services.

Gertzel Engineering Surveyors was contracted to McConnell Dowel for the provision of surveying services for the project. Survey works comprised construction set out, services drawing/as-built, As-built construction details, monitoring, modelling for crane lift locations, and design verification.

Barwon Heads Bridge

The existing Barwon River road bridge is a 300m long timber bridge , built in 1927,  It is being reconstructed as it is rapidly reaching the end of its operational life.  Along with the reconstruction of the timber & concrete road bridge a new contemporary, architecturally designed pedestrian bridge is also  to be constructed adjacent to the road bridge. The construction of both bridges is  within the tidal zone and all foundations for the bridges are below sea level.

These factors provide for a very exciting and challenging project. The project cost  is 40 million dollars. Gertzel Engineering Surveyors are contracted to McConnell Dowell for the provision of surveying  services for the project. Survey work so far has included – hydrographic surveys to prove the existing conditions of the Barwon River.

• Construction setout.

Breakwater Bridge

The $63M Breakwater Road Bridge Project has been designed to improve traffic flows, reduce the problems associated with flooding and remove the current height restriction on Breakwater Road, Belmont.

It will run from west to east, with the 640m Bridge structure crossing through the old motocross track, near the Barwon Valley Golf Course, across the Barwon River, above the Geelong-Warrnambool Rail Line and to the new Fellmongers Road, Tucker Street intersection.

The new route removes two 90 degree turns, and reduces travel distances and times. Gertzel Survey have been engaged by McConnell Dowell to provide all survey requirments for the project, from control establishment to all required as-builts of the completed project.
