In April 2009 the Victorian and Australian Governments announced $140 million for the project. The separation of Nunawading crossing was the first rail crossing removed as part of the State Government’s $38 billion Victorian Transport Plan. It has created safer and more reliable travel for train passengers, drivers and pedestrians.

The Springvale Road Rail Alliance (SRRA) was formed in June 2009 to separate Springvale Road and Belgrave/Lilydale Lines and upgrade Nunawading Station. The main partners of SRRA are VicRoads, John Holland, Arup, KBR Pty Ltd, Department of Transport and the previous rail operator, Connex.

The Springvale Road level crossing is one of the busiest in Melbourne. More than 50,000 vehicles, 218 trains and around 5,000 pedestrians share the same road space everyday at this location.

The Alliance contracted Gertzel Engineering Surveyors to provide all aspects of surveying on the Project, including provision of services 24 hours per day, seven days per week for time critical construction activities.

Work was started on the project in late 2009 and construction was completed in early 2010.
