North Melbourne Train Station

North Melbourne Station is serviced by trains on both the metropolitan and regional rail network.

Approximately two million people currently use the station each year, the majority of whom use it to change to City Loop and direct to Southern Cross Station services. This figure is expected to double in the future as extra train services are introduced to meet growing passenger demands.

North Melbourne station is currently undergoing a $35 million dollar upgrade which will include:

• a new concourse extending over the city end of the station, connecting a
• new entrance to all six platforms via lifts and escalators and via stairs to
• platforms one and six;
• new passenger information displays;
• canopies over platforms for weather protection;
• resurfaced platforms to improve safety and amenity, especially for people
• with disabilities or mobility problems; and
• additional closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to improve passenger
• safety and security.

To ensure there was minimum disruption to services and commuters McConnell Dowell designed a novel solution of constructing a monorail/protection deck system which covered the city end of platforms 1 to 6. This allowed the McConnell Dowell to continue to place footings, place services, erect precast panels for the concourse and station building without disrupting train services.

Gertzel Engineering Surveyors was contracted to McConnell Dowel for the provision of surveying services for the project. Survey works comprised construction set out, services drawing/as-built, As-built construction details, monitoring, modelling for crane lift locations, and design verification.
